When you talk about African music especially Afrobeats, Nigerian musicians mostly dominate the discussion, but it is gradually changing. With the arrival of the new sensational star from South Africa by the name Tyla, South Africa is now joining the mix with her new song ‘Water’ that is quickly rising in both American and British music charts. Her song ‘Water’ is a catchy vibe that is mixture of Amapiano and Afrobeats rooted on R&B momentum.
“Water” is currently No. 18 on the Hot 100 and No. 5 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, and it’s topped both the U.S. Afrobeats Songs and World Digital Song Sales charts. The song also received a 2024 Grammy nomination for the new best African music performance category.”
Tyla is 21-year-old and her song ‘Water’ is the first solo song by a South African musician to appear on the chart since jazz legend Hugh Masekela’s Grazing in the Grass 55 years ago.
“While Water is the song that has catapulted Tyla to mainstream success and solidified her as one of Africa’s rising musical talents, some of her previous songs have also enjoyed success, including Been Thinking and Girl Next Door, on which she featured Nigerian Afrobeats star Ayra Starr. Earlier this year, Tyla was also the opening act of Chris Brown’s Under the Influence music tour in Europe.”
Subsequently, Travis Scott and Marshmello, two of American top hip-pop musicians have joined her in the remix of the song, respectively.
Speaking about her achievement with her song ‘Water’, Tyla was quoted on Billboard magazine with these words: “This hasn’t happened in so long for a South African artist, born and raised in South Africa, with an African song, with an African dance style. Everything is so authentic, and the fact that all of that managed to translate overseas is crazy.”
