Governance in Nigeria has been entangled in the wrong hands for many years. Ever since the military took over power, the administration has suffered from a disciplined execution of duties to serve the interest of the public. It is not necessarily that the military was bent on the intent to ruin the country. They are ill prepared to govern coming from a background of a regimented system. They arrogated power to suit their whims and caprices without regards to public good.
That was the beginning of the collapse of government in Nigeria. The subsequent administrations, whether civilian or military, followed in the unruly footsteps of leading the nation with impunity. The populace accepted the abuse of power having been beaten to fall in line by the military booth. The older generation of Nigerians can still remember the time when a minor civil disobedience is followed with the butting of the gun on the head and lashing of the whip on the body of the offender.
The ensuing consequence of the military regime has been a leadership disaster. Rogues took over the government and rule the people in any manner they want. They pay no attention to accountability or equitable distribution of public resources. Rather, they make the embezzlement of the treasury their ultimate agenda. They entertain no fear of being rejected during elections by the voters. They have the confidence that with the loot they amassed, they can buy over the electorates. And they are successful as the citizens they killed their living standard with bad governance turned out in the polling booths dancing in their obituary.
The EndSARS demonstration ushered a new era. The youths took it upon themselves to do what was until then considered unthinkable. They challenged the law enforcement authorities and dismantled their air of invincibility. The realization of this feat created a new mindset. Though the EndSARS movement was met with a brutal force by the Buhari administration, the youths gained the awareness that the obstacle making their future unbearable is not insurmountable.
The elections are coming again and the same monsters that have been terrorizing the lives of the citizens with bad government are rearing their heads to run for offices. They hope to use the tools of the wicked politics to bulldoze their campaign to another chance in office. They no longer carry money in bullion vans to bribe the voters they are sharing dollars at the party primaries to delegates. Undaunted by the fierceness of the youths during the EndSARS demonstration and their preparedness to use their intelligence to uproot the rotten status quo in the coming election, they push forward their campaigns with a devilish momentum. Nevertheless, there is a new star in the sky and it has arrived on the political scene to show the people that their future does not have to be without promises. But first, they have to dump the rogue politicians with their corrupt practices and vote for a conscious and credible leader.
